MITSUKOSHI BGC, the first Japanese mall in the Philippines, is turning two—and it’s celebrating in a way that blends tradition and festivity. Inspired by Japan’s iconic Tanabata Festival, this colorful event brings love, wishes, and culture to Bonifacio Global City all throughout August.
A JAPANESE FESTIVAL IN THE HEART OF BGC
As always, MITSUKOSHI BGC stays true to its roots by offering authentic Japanese experiences. This time, it transforms its entire space into a Tanabata-themed wonderland. Guests can stroll through vibrant lanterns, write wishes on bamboo walls, and enjoy a stunning display of summer-inspired decor. Ultimately, this celebration goes beyond visuals—it immerses visitors in the rich spirit of Japanese culture.
BRINGING THE TANABATA LEGEND TO LIFE
At the heart of the Tanabata Festival lies the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi—two lovers separated by the Milky Way who reunite once a year. Traditionally, people write their wishes on colorful tanzaku paper strips and hang them on bamboo trees. Similarly, MITSUKOSHI BGC encourages guests to take part in this meaningful ritual, letting them express hopes and dreams in a beautiful and symbolic way.
TRADITIONAL EVENTS MEET MODERN CELEBRATION

The festivities began on July 18 with a bang, featuring the Kagami Biraki ceremony—a sake barrel-breaking tradition that symbolizes harmony and good fortune. Not long after, Mitsuko, the mall’s iconic Kokeshi doll, appeared in a vibrant summer yukata, instantly adding charm and personality to the celebration.
On July 19, the mall opened the event to the public. For instance, guests were treated to a powerful taiko drum performance that echoed through the mall’s halls. Following that, they watched in awe as sushi master Iichi Yamashita performed the famed Maguro Cutting Show. He skillfully sliced an 80kg tuna flown directly from Japan, drawing cheers from an amazed crowd.
CELEBRATING A MILESTONE OF CONNECTION
Since its launch, MITSUKOSHI BGC has offered more than just shopping. Built by Federal Land, Nomura Real Estate, and Isetan Mitsukoshi, the mall stands as a cultural bridge between Japan and the Philippines. Moreover, its location beneath The Seasons Residences has made it a lifestyle destination for foodies, fashion lovers, and culture seekers alike.

Whether you’re looking for fun things to do in BGC, craving Japanese food, or simply wanting to experience something new, MITSUKOSHI BGC’s Tanabata Festival has something for everyone. So, come write your wishes, enjoy the sights, and be part of this magical summer celebration—running until August 17.
